Ugandan Lambs

In November of 2004, Ugandan Lambs was
started in response to the needs represented within one
extended family…the family of Sam and Ruth Sebabi.

Sam and Ruth were born and raised in Uganda, and the AIDS epidemic has deeply affected their lives. As sisters, brother, cousins and in-laws began to die from AIDS, the Sebabis found themselves sole providers for all the children left behind. The burden became too great for them bear alone. Ugandan Lambs was established to help provide for the needs of these children, and move them toward independence and a hopeful future. Originally, Ugandan Lambs began with 25 children. Today, there are 58, ranging in ages from 4 to 20.

Uganda began to document its first AIDS cases in 1982, calling the
disease “slim” for its skeleton-producing effects upon the body. Scientists believe that this region of Africa, around the area of Lake Victoria, was where HIV first began infecting humans. To date, over 1.6 million Ugandans have died from the disease, and another one million are living with HIV.

Today, Uganda is widely hailed as Africa's AIDS success story. In 1992 it had a 16 percent rate of infection; by 2003 it had dropped to 4 and 6 percent. The turnaround is widely attributed to President Yoweri Museveni, who spoke out early and often about the disease, and a homegrown grassroots campaign from ordinary Ugandans to care for the sick and educate the healthy. However, even as HIV/AIDS statistics begin to recede, the situation for the children left behind by the disease worsens by the day.

The Steel Magnolias

To raise funds and to promote goodwill and the public’s awareness of the needs and services of the Stramski Children’s Developmental Center.
By raising funds, through a variety of events and projects, the Steel Magnolias support the Geraldine A. Stramski Children’s Developmental Center, located in Miller Children’s Hospital, Long Beach, California.

The Stramski Developmental Center is a special needs center created to help children and families deal with conditions like autism, cleft lip and palate, learning problems, mental retardation, developmental delays and birth defects. The center also has a sleep disorders and international adoption clinic. For many of these children their conditions are invisible, serious and life-long and they face almost insurmountable challenges. Very few of these situations are “quick-fixes” and require numerous visits and extensive pre-consult and post consult work. Children need advocates and for many of our patients, parents are not effective in this role primarily due to cultural, educational and language differences. The Stramski Center fills this gap by facilitating access to services and monitoring progress. Using a multidisciplinary approach, the center is able to provide individualized care to help children reach their optimum potential.

Pathways to Independence

Our Mission

Pathways to Independence commits to catalyzing profound and productive changes in the lives of young women in Long Beach and Orange County who have been neglected by their families and society. Many of our clients come from alcoholic families. Many have experienced years of incest or other forms of abuse. Some spent years in foster care or even became indigent.

Pathways to Independence was founded in 1991 by educators, Dave & Joyce Bishop, and received 501(c)(3) status as a Public Charity in February, 1994. The Bishops initial goal was to help a former student, Monica, get advanced education and achieve self-sufficiency. Monica was the product of a dysfunctional alcoholic family and at age 19 had a 2 year-old daughter and no support. With the Bishops' help, Monica was able to get advanced training and a full-time job with health benefits for her and her daughter.

Long Beach Community Improvement League

Founded in the City of Long Beach over four decades ago, the Long Beach Community Improvement League (CIL) began as a grassroots organization of community members, educators, and volunteers determined to overcome racial inequality within the school system and the community. When forty yeas ago our first program, PROJECT TUTOR, began, the response was explosive: within 6 months, Project Tutor had to be moved to a larger facility, located at 2222 Olive Avenue in Long Beach. Less than one year from its inception, CIL was incorporated as a nonprofit organization. CIL continued to successfully grow, as early organizers began to expand CIL's services in response to residents' needs. CIL was also the first Head Start Program in the entire western region.

Our Mission:

Today, our mission stands as it has for forty years: “To create quality public service programs to empower the community economically, socially, and culturally.”

Our Goal:

Our goal has been “to provide quality urban action programs designed specifically to alter and positively affect all aspects of life for members of the Long Beach community.”

Our Vision:

“To continue our commitment of building strong partnerships with other community services in order to afford our residents integrated comprehensive services, to avoid duplication of efforts, and to maximize scarce resources. Therefore, our residents will be empowered to attain their full potential, meet new challenges, and reach their goals of self-actualization.”

Long Beach Basket Brigade

In 2005 the Long Beach Basket Brigade was formed in order to assist families in need in our very own community . That year the Long Beach Basket Brigade raised $2000.00 and delivered 50 baskets to needy families. In 2006 this amazing team of individuals came together again. This time we raised over $4000.00, and were able to deliver 100 baskets to a low income housing community in Long Beach, CA. In 2007, the team once again committed their time to the organization and delivery of these baskets. Last year we raised over $6000.00 and were able to help over 150 struggling families. The volunteer time and donated money was important, but the response from the community was amazing. One hundred and fifty families were served, one hundred and fifty families and a team of volunteers were filled with gratitude.

The Long Beach Basket Brigade is an amazing group of volunteers who get together each year to assemble and deliver food baskets to less fortunate families in the Long Beach, California. The Long Beach Basket Brigade has spawned from the larger national efforts of The Basket Brigade organization of The Anthony Robbins Foundation in San Diego, CA.

Leadership Long Beach

Leadership Long Beach was founded in 1989 by some of our community’s most influential and visionary stakeholders. These founders envisioned the formation of a civic improvement program that would serve the community by educating and motivating leaders on issues important to the future and sustainability of our city. A corresponding purpose was to create a network of knowledgeable and informed community leaders who would support each other as they continued in their professional and personal areas of endeavor.

Our mission is to “develop and connect principled leaders to strengthen the community.” This means more than simply training people to lead. It means instilling in them a sense of dedication to the Long Beach community — creating a passion within each graduate for the betterment of the city, and a commitment to working together to achieve it. The leaders produced by the Leadership Long Beach program have shared experiences, associations and values that enable them to set imaginative, yet realistic goals, and achieve them through coordinated and effective strategies.

His Nesting Place

His Nesting Place Ministries is a non-profit Christian ministry whose reason for existence is to be an advocate for the unborn and minister to the needs of women in a crisis pregnancy. That purpose is based on a foundation of four guiding philosophies or beliefs.

We believe that the ultimate purpose in living is to glorify God through serving Jesus Christ our Lord, reaching out to a suffering humanity and sharing His love and His sacrifice.

We believe God has endowed humankind with the privilege of bearing children; that children are a gift from God, a heritage from the Lord, created in His image. We are, therefore, accountable to God to preserve, protect, and provide for them.

We believe that human life is of inestimable worth and significance in all of its dimensions, including the aged, all of those with varied mental and physical abilities, and every other condition in which humanness is expressed from conception to the grave.

We believe it is in keeping with the Word of God that we actively intervene on behalf of anyone unjustly sentenced to death and to speak out for those who are unable to speak for themselves.

Our commitment to these principles is apparent in every area of the organization. The values and methods used to promote the goals of His Nesting Place are drawn from the wisdom of God and His Word-the Bible-rather than from humanistic notions of the day.

In conclusion, His Nesting Place Ministries strives to be a reflection of what we believe to be the mandates of the Creator Himself in regard to the protection of and provision for children and the family.

Whether you're a young girl between the ages of 11 and 15 or a parent searching for wholesome resources you can trust and your daughter can rely on, you've come to the right place. You see, I started Girlfriends two years ago when I realized the importance of positive role models and mentors in a young girl's life. I have two daughters of my own and knew early on that I wanted to give them every opportunity to grow and mature into happy, healthy, ambitious adults.

We gather together once a week to talk about what's going on in our lives, problems we run into, and work through positive solutions. Sometimes we go on field trips or dive into creative activities as we learn about community service, how to handle money, how to stay safe, how to set and achieve important goals, or how to love and accept ourselves. Whatever we do, we do have a great time laughing, talking, and getting to know one another. The bottom line is that we are gaining essential life skills while forming lifelong relationships.

Friends of Colorado Lagoon

The Friends of Colorado Lagoon (FOCL) are a coalition of concerned citizens working to restore and preserve an important urban wetland in our community. We promote cooperative solutions to ensure a healthy balance between recreation, flood management, water quality, wildlife habitat and native plants in Colorado Lagoon. Our primary goal is to protect public health and environmental resources.

The Colorado Lagoon is historically part of the greater Los Cerritos Wetlands. Once a thriving ecosystem that encompassed most of East Long Beach with borders that included portions of what is now California State University, Long Beach, the Wetlands complex totaled about 2400 acres. The Lagoon has undergone many changes since the land began being utilized by oil operations in the late 19th century. Colorado Lagoon today measures about 13 acres, with many area homes situated on historic wetlands.

California Pools of Hope, Inc.

The mission of California Pools of Hope is to promote wellness and improve the quality of life for individuals with health needs in an accessible, warm-water aquatic facility.

For many disabled children, adults and the elderly, hope is spelled "C P H" California Pools of Hope. CPH is dedicated to promoting wellness and improving the quality of life to the underserved that include the disabled, injured, elderly, and children/youth.

California Pools of Hope, Inc. history began in 1956 with the support of the community, a dedicated civic leader (Evelyn duPont) and a small backyard pool. Ms. duPont had developed polio as an adult and was rehabilitating through aquatic therapy. Her rehabilitation inspired her to open her pool to provide free swim lessons to children with disabilities.

In 1963, the organization was incorporated and purchased an outdoor pool facility located at 6801 Long Beach Boulevard, in Long Beach, CA. In 1977, a major renovation was completed to enclose the facility allowing for year-round usage. The not for profit corporation later became the California Pools for the Handicapped and in 1996, the California Pools of Hope, Inc. (CPH).
